More details
Built from 1986 to 1993, the Lamborghini LM002 is often seen as the predecessor to the Hummer, which gained notoriety during the 1990 invasion of Kuwait. Like the Hummer, the LM002 started as a military light truck for the Italian army, with LM standing for “Lamborghini Militaria” and earning the nickname “Rambo Lambo.” It was designed to compete with the likes of Land Rover, Jeep, and the emerging luxury SUV market.
Lamborghini initially produced two prototypes, the Cheetah and the LM001, both using rear-mounted Chrysler V8 engines intended for military use. However, these models were poorly received due to their unbalanced handling. Lamborghini then reworked the project, creating a new chassis and moving their renowned Countach V12 Downdraft engine to the front. The resulting LM002 debuted at the Brussels Auto Show in 1986, where it earned its famous nickname.
In its civilian form, the LM002 boasted luxury features such as a full leather interior, air conditioning, power windows, and a premium sound system controlled from a roof-mounted console. Pirelli developed special Scorpion 345/60 R17 tires with two tread patterns for off-road and mixed use, incorporating run-flat technology for operation in hot desert conditions.
Lamborghini even planned to enter the LM002 in the 1988 Paris-Dakar rally. They hired engineers to lighten the vehicle and upgrade its suspension and frame. Although funding issues prevented participation in Paris-Dakar, the LM002 did compete in other desert raid events like the Rally of the Pharos in Egypt.
The LM002 is powered by a 5.2-liter V12 engine producing 444 hp, giving it a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 118 mph. However, it is notoriously thirsty, achieving about eight miles per gallon and equipped with a massive 72-gallon fuel tank. This beast requires four gallons of engine oil and coolant each, making it a poor choice for those seeking fuel economy.
Lamborghini produced only 328 LM002s over seven years, making them rare sights, typically seen at exotic car events. This particular LM002, chassis #2058, is Polo Storico Certified and features the coveted Downdraft engine. It's finished in Nero over Nero. It underwent a meticulous Italian concours restoration, ensuring it remains a pristine example of this unique vehicle.
