1972 Ferrari 246 GTS Dino

I recently got a call from a dear friend and collector describing to me a story about a Ferrari 246 GTS Dino. Without hestitation I exclaimed, “I want the car!”

With the invention of the internet and social media, almost everything is available for public consumption. Hidden away cars that were once subject of folklore have become common knowledge and the hunt for the un-discovered garage/barn find becomes more difficult and elusive.

Hearing about a hidden away Ferrari 246 GTS Dino, does not happen very often. Upon receiving a few photos of the car and the chassis number I quickly started to Google everything I could. To my surprise, I could find no results to my match my query. I immediately emailed Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, requesting a famous “Massini Report,” and to my amazement he responded, “ I have no information about this car.”

Amazingly, in 40 years this 1972 Ferrari 246 GTS Dino had never been advertised, restored, publicly shown or even photographed. It remained as a completely original, un-touched and an excellent candidate for a preservation class.

Sometime in the mid 1970s a USA Vietnam veteran decided to purchase matching Ferrari Dino’s for him and his wife. One of the cars, Chassis —- was purchased from Italy and for over 40 years this very cool 246 GTS lived a very quiet and normal life in Northern California.

At some point in the 1980s it was given a very simple repaint, in its original and rare Rosso Bordeaux color yet still maintained its complete original Black interior including one of the nicest preserved Mousehair dash I have seen! A 36,000 mile time capsule with all original glass, gauges, rubber and stunning chrome.

In addition, unlike many Dino examples, this car was basically a “race car.” No AC, factory radio delete, no chairs, no flares and NO power windows. Can we say lightweight?

The car comes complete with original books, tools and some records.
