Mercedes-Benz is best known around the world for building well-made, big, luxury sedans and jaunty coupes with removable hard tops targeted to, how to say… “experienced drivers.”
Not to be overlooked, however, is Mercedes-Benz’s long history of racing involvement dating to the company’s very beginnings, building towards the landmark “Silver Arrows” W125 Grand Prix cars, the legendary Le Mans and Millie Miglia winning 300 SLRs right up to today’s DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters or German Touring Car Championship) winning C 63 DTM and Formula One World Championship winning W08 EQ.
Mercedes-Benz has built its reputation in the world’s most prestigious forms of racing, as in each series contested, performing at championship winning levels in the great German tradition of passing down what they learn in racing to their road going cars.
We can’t think of any other car or manufacturer that has produced a road car so raw and truly race inspired since the 2005 CLK DTM.
In the late 1960’s, Aufrecht, Melcher and GroBaspach (AMG), became the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. AMG changed the Stuttgart marquis’ profile forever by creating some of the most iconic and sought-after road going and racing cars of our time by taking already great cars, dropping in impossibly powerful motors, beefing up suspensions, tweaking aerodynamics, stripping out luxury touches and creating virtual racing cars for the street.
The AMG Mercedes-Benz collaboration ranges from the AMG “Hammer” 6.0 litre V8 to their master achievement, the CLK GTR which won the FIA GT championship in 1997 and 1998. To celebrate the FIA GT Championship with their customers, AMG Mercedes-Benz created a very limited number of CLK GTRs that were made available in road going versions, hardly decipherable from the GT cars.
A Car With Soul.
Notably, CLK 63 “Black” and the CLK DTM were released in very limited numbers and thus creating an instant market demand for the ultra-high performance cars which is why we like them!
The CLK DTM is so special and so coveted because it has so much soul. We can’t think of any other car or manufacturer that has produced a road car so raw and truly race inspired since the CLK DTM.
The CLK DTM was not produced by Mercedes… not by AMG… rather the actual race division of the company, HWA AG (Hans Werner Aufrecht). HWA’s treatment of the CLK DTM included trimming out as much weight as possible to the point where the steering wheel only has four buttons on it. Luxury touches in the cabin are all but forgotten in favor of weight savings adding carbon fiber pieces wherever possible including the big rear wing, flared fenders and door panels, all lending to a real racing car-like presence.
Under the hood, the CLK DTM features AMG’s version of the supercharged 5.5 litre V8 which creates 582BHP and 590 pound feet of torque driving the car from 0 to 60MPH in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 200MPH.
The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM with us now at Curated is one of 100 built. The cars were never intended for the U.S. market but a handful, (maybe 6-7?) have made their way in under the show and display rule which only allows them to be driven 2,500 miles per year. So, finding one of these rare gems in the U.S. is practically impossible.
At first glance the CLK DTM’s $450+K range price tag seems a bit extreme, but only if you don’t understand, drive or spend time with the car. It is not a sports car, not a GT, not a Supercar…the DTM is a race car, some how made for the street.
In our eyes, one day the value of the DTM will shock everyone. The DTM is a sophisticated car, coveted by astute and discerning collectors.
